Downer Volunteers Help Improve Indigenous Grasslands

Members of Downer Infrastructure volunteered their time and resources to improve the indigenous grasslands within Geelong’s rail corridors.

Members of Downer Infrastructure volunteered their time and resources recently to improve the indigenous grasslands within Geelong’s rail corridors.  As part of a number of broader rail access improvement projects, the team hand planted locally sourced indigenous plant species and reseeded large expanses with key native grasses.

One of the proposed rail installations would pass through an area which was home to the threatened Arching Flax Lily.  After consulting with local farmers and the Department of Sustainability, the team relocated the Lily to a nearby sanctuary ensuring the plant can be enjoyed by the Geelong community for many generations to come.

A local farmer who took the Flax Lily was very pleased to see a construction company being so proactive in the protection of native flora and has invited Downer to use his land for further planting should the need arise.
