Metrowater Clear Harbour Alliance, Auckland, New Zealand
Project Scope: Downer was tasked in an alliance, alongside Metrowater, GHD and Opus, to carry out a major upgrade of the drainage networks of several of Auckland’s suburbs. The purpose of the $50m upgrade, was to reduce the amount of wastewater pollution that overflows into the waterways leading to Waitemata Harbour.
Services Provided: The upgrade involved the replacement of 34km of drainage networks to separate stormwater and wastewater from 936 properties. Additionally, 22km of new private drainage, 9km of new public wastewater and 3km of new public stormwater drainage was installed.
Completed eight months ahead of schedule, the project ensures that the drainage infrastructure can cope with forecasted growth in the area. There is also a long term positive impact on the environment by providing cleaner water to streams, beaches and the Waitemata Harbour. The project also set a new industry benchmark by installing over 90% of pipes using trenchless methods.
A key focus for the alliance partners was to effectively interface between the community, local residents and businesses, utility service providers and the Eden Park Stadium Upgrade project team. This resulted in more than 80 written customer compliments being received by the alliance.
The alliance partners were awarded the Alliance Team of Excellence Award for 2009 from the Alliance Association of Australia and the Best Practice Award for Community Relations and Customer Relationship Management from the New Zealand Planning Institute.
