Defence

Downer leverages the size, scale and diversity of its service offerings to provide Defence, Government and Industry with a full suite of Defence solutions including: complex construction and infrastructure project management and delivery; support to capability programs; communication and ICT; cyber and physical security solutions; and niche engineering capabilities in design, asset management, maintenance, systems integration and reliability.

Our capabilities span the full asset lifecycle, from initial business case through to design and engineering, construction, manufacturing, commissioning, introduction into service, and ongoing asset management.

With a large number of security cleared personnel, we aim to employ the best people and bring thought leadership to each stage of the asset lifecycle as we support our customers to plan, create and sustain.

Our Mission is to bring our diverse capabilities to the market and provide a truly Australian, Tier 1 solution for Defence and Government.

Our experience

Downer’s relationship with the Australian Defence Forces can be traced back to World War II when Evans Deakins Industries (the EDI in Downer EDI Limited) designed and constructed major military hardware, such as the naval ‘Attack Class’ frigates.

Since this time, Downer has worked closely with the Australian Army to design and manufacture the Echidna Explosive Ordnance Disposal Robot; constructed significant infrastructure such as the F-111 Fighter/Bomber Maintenance Hangar at RAAF Amberley; and partnered with Mercedes-Benz to deliver the Medium Recovery Vehicle (MRV) which is still in service today.

More recently, Downer has supported Defence through the National Airfield Maintenance Program and deployed our pavement rehabilitation expertise on runways and taxiways at RAAF Base Williamtown and RAAF Base Edinburgh.  We have also delivered electrical services to Defence base infrastructure, including delivery of works on the Liverpool Area Military High Voltage Upgrade Project and the current upgrade of HV infrastructure at RAAF Base Williamtown.

Our subsidiary, AGIS, is our Australian SME engineering and advisory arm for Defence and Government. AGIS provides above the line services as part of the full asset lifecycle, to program delivery on major capital projects such as the replacement of deployable wide area networks and test facilities to support the new submarine fleet.
