Downer and Sydney Airport Innovate in Complex Reconstruction
Downer’s Specialised Pavements and Projects business unit is a Tier 1 provider of technical airfield pavements, delivering major capital projects across both domestic and international airports.
One of our latest projects, a comprehensive apron upgrade at Sydney Airport, involves constructing deep lift pavements in three layers, reaching a total depth of 450mm. This complex task is executed within a strict overnight curfew to ensure uninterrupted airport operations.
In close collaboration with Sydney Airport, the team has developed an innovative, industry-first mix design specifically tailored to meet the unique demands of this project.
With a rapid project turnaround essential, the reconstructed pavement must accommodate aircraft traffic immediately following each shift. Downer carefully designed deep lift pavement method has been engineered to endure early traffic stresses, all within a tight six-hour construction window, effectively minimising operational impact at Sydney Airport.
This solution has been rigorously tested through laboratory and on-site trials at Downer’s Rosehill facility, simulating aircraft loads to confirm performance.
As the team moves forward, they remain focused on continual improvement, ensuring consistent delivery for Sydney Airport and setting new standards in technical airfield pavement construction.
