Indigenous Australian stories
Downer Defence’s operations are deeply embedded in local communities, and we understand that our footprint provides a unique platform to drive real change in the communities we operate in.
Whether it’s our Indigenous employees, the Indigenous businesses we partner with, or the Indigenous communities whose country and culture are part of the fabric of our work environment, their stories are manifold. From personal, transformative accomplishments, to programs that bring new opportunities to a community, the impact afforded by Defence industry are varied and real.
Discover stories of partnerships and programs that have created meaningful opportunities and outcomes for First Nations peoples and communities.
5% Indigenous employees
With respect, and a genuine understanding of culture and connection to Country, Downer Defence has a continued focus on cultural competency through implementing an Innovate Reconciliation Plan (RAP) and providing a culturally safe and inclusive workplace for all employees – of which five percent identify as Indigenous.
$50M spent with Indigenous businesses
Indigenous businesses working in Defence industry play a key role in supporting our Australian Defence Force. With over 130 Indigenous and social trader businesses in the Downer Defence supply chain, the stories of growth, training, apprenticeships, internships, opportunities that reach far into communities, and the overarching impact on sovereign capability are significant.
For Downer Defence, the opportunities to develop deeper connections and understanding of Country and community is ever-present through collaboration and partnerships.
Reconciliation Action Plan
Our RAP reaffirms our commitment to the reconciliation process as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their communities and organisations.
Downer has a proud history in Australia, and we are committed to ensuring we play a role in further empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our latest Innovate RAP will help us to achieve these objectives by enhancing existing relationships and generating new opportunities.
