Mobile Data Collection using High-Speed Mobile Laser Scanning
Mobile mapping systems (used by Downer on airports and roads in Australia and New Zealand) deliver a groundbreaking solution for high-speed in-motion surveying using the Leica Pegasus Mobile Laser Scanner. This cutting-edge technology is set to redefine the efficiency, safety, and accuracy of surveying.
In New Zealand, the effectiveness of the system has already been demonstrated at Queenstown Airport, where the data collected is providing a prime source to inform asset management decisions. And at Dunedin International Airport, outputs from a survey of the taxiway and aprons have informed design for the Taxiway Alpha and Bravo pavement rehabilitation works—with the same data also being used for the Runway 03/21 rehabilitation project.
In Australia, Brisbane Airport Corporation has partnered with us to trial the P2U to survey key elements of its airfield.
Why Mobile Laser Scanning Stands Out
The Pegasus system offers significant advantages over traditional surveying techniques:
- Speed and Efficiency: Surveys can be conducted at high speeds, minimizing disruption to operations.
- Safety: Reduces the need for prolonged on-site presence, enhancing safety for survey teams.
- Unmatched Accuracy: Capable of capturing sub-centimetre accuracy with laser scanning and photogrammetry.
How It Works
The P2U utilises a combination of advanced technologies to produce high-resolution datasets:
- Point Cloud Data: Generated by a Z&F profiler that collects 1,000,000 points across 200-line scans per second, achieving sub-centimetre precision.
- Photogrammetric Data: Stitched together from six internal cameras capturing images every 0.5–10 meters, alongside two external cameras designed for pavement analysis (e.g., detecting flushing, cracking, roughness, and rutting).
- Comprehensive Coverage: Captures 360° imagery to analyse both pavement and surrounding structures, delivering an ‘all-you-can-see’ dataset.
Transforming Data into Actionable Insights
By leveraging Mobile Laser Scanning, clients can gain a deeper understanding of their assets and conditions, enabling smarter planning and investment decisions.
