Mornington beach matting provides pathway to inclusivity
23/02/2022
DM Roads has partnered with the Mornington Shire Council’s Community Wellbeing team to trial an expanded beach matting project which will provide easier beach accessibility for wheelchair users.
Our Mornington team commenced the beach matting project on January 6th with the final two installations completed last week. There will be ongoing inspections and maintenance for the duration of the trial project which is due to conclude at the end of Daylight Savings in April.
The specially designed mat has been installed over the sand providing easier access for wheelchair users and people with mobility issues to reach the water’s edge. Across the Mornington Peninsula, there is a total of five access points, which includes Mothers Beach, Mount Martha Beach, Sorrento, Rosebud and Rye.
DM Roads Customer Experience Team Leader Jane Piotrowski said there has already been an incredible community response to the project. “This is a project which will make a big difference to the local community. It’s great to hear positive feedback from the trial and the difference it has already made to people’s lives. We have really enjoyed working closely with Mornington Shire Council to make this project a reality and improve accessibility for everyone in our community.”
