Downer achieves BIM ISO19650 part 3 certification
20/09/2022
In an Australian first, Downer recently achieved certification to ISO 19650-3:2020 Building Information Modelling for the organisation’s Building Information Modelling (BIM) capability in the operational phase of assets.
The challenge of efficiently managing complex assets is one experienced by every asset management executive. In any facility, building or location there could be thousands of assets to maintain and countless pieces of data to collect, analyse and understand in order to deliver strategic asset management.
So how then can you optimise asset management and streamline decision making to best optimise maintenance programs, minimise breakdowns and keep facilities running smoothly?
Downer’s Facilities & Asset Services business has harnessed cutting-edge technology to address this challenge – implementing a Building Information Modelling (BIM) asset management solution to better track asset performance and condition.
BIM uses various methodologies and technologies to create a smart model of a facility, showing a ‘single pane of glass’ view of all information about any asset on site, from its 3D visualisation, spatial context, and condition to details of upcoming maintenance.
Having a real-time, single source of truth view of all assets has many benefits, from improving decision making to creating efficiencies in managing assets, reducing whole-of-life costs of ownership, and improving asset utility. It also has real and tangible implications for sustainability by helping to optimise energy consumption and extending the useful life of assets – all key benefits for owners and managers of building assets.
In an Australian first, Downer’s BIM capability achieved certification to ISO 19650-3:2020 in June, from the certification body, BSI Group ANZ.
ISO 19650 is the international standard for managing information over the entire life cycle of an asset. Part 3 covers the processes for the organisation and management of digitised building information throughout the operational phase of the asset’s lifecycle. Achieving this certification for the BIM is a further demonstration of Downer’s capability as a world-class asset management provider.
Marc Barnes, BSI’s Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, said
“BSI Group ANZ is proud of our long relationship with the Downer Group, particularly the Facilities & Asset Services arm of the business. In 2015 Downer was the first in the ANZ region to achieve certification to ISO 55001 with BSI. Today we have seen them again demonstrate leadership and commitment in this market by being the first to achieve ISO 19650-3 Kitemark certification within the ANZ region following a rigorous two-stage audit. Downer is now one of a handful of such organisations globally to have successfully achieved this certification.”
Pat Burke, Head of Downer’s Facilities & Asset Services business said
“Our future is grounded in data and our ability to leverage it for improved decision making and safer, more effective execution of critical tasks. Achieving this certification is a strong demonstration of Downer’s capability as an asset management partner of choice, who is committed to innovation and continuous improvement. BIM has huge implications for all types of asset and facilities management contracts, and Downer is well placed to help customers capitalise on the technology.”
Liz Curran, Executive General Manager, Health and Education adds to this sentiment. “Given our significant portfolio of facilities we manage via Public Private Partnerships in Health and Education, we are well placed to trial and further develop this approach over the long term with our partners,” she says.
“This cutting-edge solution will allow us to deliver better, more efficient use of critical assets to best serve students, patients and the wider community. Ultimately, it means that the facilities we manage will run more smoothly and have greater utility for the people who use them every day.”
