Downer Case Study
Downer committed to getting locals into jobs
06/10/2022
VEC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Downer EDI Limited, who specialises in bridges and structures, civil infrastructure, rail, steel fabrication and water infrastructure.
Downer in Tasmania is committed to supporting the communities where we live and work. That’s why we’ve pledged support to the Glenorchy Jobs Hub. Downer and VEC have one of their main offices at Austins Ferry in the Glenorchy municipality and we want to see local job seekers gain training and work.
Downer congratulates the Glenorchy Jobs Hub on getting more than 500 local job seekers into employment in its first year of operation.
Speaking at today’s first birthday event Downer General Manager – Tasmania, Marcus Stephens, said the company was proud to partner with the Glenorchy Jobs Hub.
“The unemployment rate in Glenorchy continues to sit well above the national rate. Initiatives such as the Glenorchy Jobs Hub are an important part of closing that gap.
“At a time when the size of the state’s infrastructure pipeline is putting pressure on the existing workforce, we want to see job seekers upskilled to be able to take on roles in delivering these critical infrastructure projects.
“We are committed to local labour hire, which provides opportunities for community members to gain skills and experience. That’s good for individuals, for communities and for our business.”
Mr Stephens said Downer has made a series of pledges to the Glenorchy Jobs Hub to help ensure the service thrives and to provide real opportunities for job seekers.
“Many of our people live and work in the Glenorchy area. With our head office at Austins Ferry, we’re keen to help people in our own neighbourhood, especially if we can help connect young Tasmanians to training and employment pathways.
“We want to see young Tasmanians be part of building a stronger future for Tasmania, together.”
