Downer's first Waratah Series 2 train begins service
03/09/2020
Downer EDI Limited (Downer) announced that the first of 17 new Waratah Series 2 trains have started service, providing improved reliability for the suburban network and greater customer comfort.
Downer is delivering the Waratah Series 2 trains as part of the New South Wales Government’s $4.3 billion More Trains, More Services program.
The Chief Executive Officer of Downer, Grant Fenn, said: “Downer is very pleased to continue working with Transport for NSW and our delivery partners to provide safe, reliable and comfortable world-class transport solutions.”
“When the 17 Waratah Series 2 trains are all in service, Downer will have delivered a total of 119 Waratah trains for the commuters of New South Wales.”
The New South Wales Government initially ordered 78 Waratah trains. In 2016, Transport for NSW ordered an additional 24 and in February 2019 a further 17 Waratah trains, known as Waratah Series 2.
The initial 24 Waratah Series 2 trains were delivered in record time and the first train of the latest tranche of 17 Waratah Series 2 trains has been delivered within an exceptional 18 months from receiving the order.
The trains are needed to support increased patronage demand across the suburban rail network and to provide customers with comfortable and reliable commuter services.
The new Waratah Series 2 trains feature:
- Double deck cars
- Priority seating
- Wheelchair spaces and hearing aid loops
- Air conditioning with advanced temperature control
- High definition customer information screens
- Internal and external CCTV.
The Waratah Series 2 trains will continue to enter passenger service progressively, after rigorous testing and commissioning at our Cardiff facility
They will operate on the T2 Inner West & Leppington, T3 Bankstown and T8 Airport & South lines.
