Downer in Gladstone
Delivering today to power tomorrow
Gladstone is one of Australia’s industrial heartlands, with a key role to play in the energy transition.
Downer has worked in the region for three decades, partnering with our clients to maintain critical assets, retain skills in regional areas and support them in their journey to lower emissions.
We're proud of our strong delivery track record, commitment to community and partnership with local industry. Through our expertise, we help our clients optimise, maintain and upgrade their process plants, materials handling and port infrastructure and power stations.
Our expertise
We have a strong presence in the Gladstone region, where we have worked for 30 years, supporting key industrial and power generation facilities to keep their operations running smoothly.
Our team of mechanical and electrical specialists deliver shutdown, turnaround and outage, maintenance services and project work to customers including Gladstone Ports Corporation, Rio Tinto Yarwun, NRG, Orica and Queensland Alumina Limited.
Recent projects include:
- 2023 shutdown at the Rio Tinto Yarwun Alumina Refinery, one of Gladstone’s largest industrial facilities. Over 52,000 labour hours, we delivered work to the boiler and heat recovery steam generators, utilising a specialist skillset in mechanical services, welding and lagging. The team were recognised by our client for their safe, knowledgeable and efficient approach to the shut.
- 2024 overhaul at the NRG Gladstone Power Station working on the removal and shipping of the aero-derivative Siemens SGT-A20 (formerly Rolls Royce Avon) Gas Turbine and GEC EAS-1 Power Turbine to the United Kingdom for major overhauls. With short notice mobilization and high-quality workmanship, we showcased our technical prowess and commitment to excellence.
Energy transition
As the energy transition accelerates, every industry will need to be more sustainable to meet the emissions reductions goals set out in the Paris Agreement. We partner with our clients across the power generation and industrial sectors to make their facilities more efficient and reliable, and help reduce their emissions, while still ensuring they can continue to operate and deliver their services.
By embracing emerging technologies and genuinely partnering with our customers, we support them in their journey towards cleaner energy and lower emissions, while revitalising our industrial and manufacturing hubs for the future.
CloseSafety
Our commitment to safety is fundamental to our operations and a key driver behind our sustained success in providing essential maintenance, shutdown, turnaround, and outage services to some of Australia’s most significant industrial players, including Gladstone Ports Corporation, Rio Tinto Yarwun, NRG, Orica, and Queensland Alumina Limited.
In Gladstone we employ over 350 people across a range of roles including mechanical fitters, boilermakers, riggers and scaffolders, completing 360,000 work hours in FY24.
We believe that with the right team, approach, and culture, Zero Harm is not just a goal—it’s an achievable, long-term norm.
