Landfill construction and management
Downer is supporting local authorities in Tasmania to meet their sustainability and waste management goals.
We have significant experience providing end-to-end solutions in landfill construction and management for domestic (Level B) and contaminated (Level C) waste.
Our capability spans all stages of landfill management from construction to receiving, placing and compacting waste. Our services include leachate and stormwater management, litter, weed, vermin and erosion control, quarry operations and access road maintenance.
We understand the environmental, operational, interface and safety requirements necessary for construction of a new cell, often on an existing landfill site.
Our experience includes:
- bulk earthworks to cut, fill and remove material
- installing compliant clay bases and berms
- overseeing blasting
- installing ground water relief systems, leachate detection pipework and leachate collection systems
- installing clay and poly liners and geo fabrics, including quality compliance with MQA and CQA requirements.
Downer was engaged by Southern Waste Solutions to manage the Copping Landfill facility in southern Tasmania in August 2001 and was also awarded the tender to construct Tasmania’s first Category C Cell facility at Copping in 2017. We delivered a state-of-the-art facility that delivers a highly secure, lined landfill.
We’re also managing a project with Glenorchy City Council to design and build a new landfill cell at their Jackson Street site, which will extend the life of the site by 10 years.
With populations growing, we look forward to offering our expertise in landfill construction and management to many more communities around Tasmania.
