Downer awarded Olympic Dam shutdown contract
11/05/2021
Downer EDI Limited (Downer) announced today that its Asset Services business has recently been awarded a major contract by BHP to provide maintenance and shutdown services at Olympic Dam in South Australia as part of the Smelter Campaign Maintenance 2021 Project (SCM21).
Downer will deliver two work packages as part of the contract, involving specialist welding, boiler engineering and planning and scheduling services. The scope of work includes:
- non-hot metals structural, mechanical and piping work, consisting of feed preparation, gas and dust, acid plant, utilities and non-process infrastructure;
- refurbishment and overhaul of the Waste Heat Boiler; and,
- coordination of specialist subcontractors.
The project is expected to run for approximately eight months until December 2021, with the major shutdown commencing in August. Downer will employ more than 350 people at the peak of the works.
Downer also delivered the non-hot metals scope of work as part of the Smelter Campaign Maintenance project in 2017 (SCM17).
The Executive General Manager of Downer’s Asset Services business, Pat Burke, said the contract win demonstrates Downer’s delivery capability and capacity as a leading provider of major shutdown services across Australia’s critical economic infrastructure.
“Downer has over 50 years’ experience in the industrial sector, delivering complex maintenance, capital programs, shutdown, turnaround and outage services to our customers.”
“We have a strong relationship with BHP, and have worked closely with them to plan, prepare and deliver maintenance events and major projects in the past, including the assembly of an electrostatic precipitator at Olympic Dam in 2017.”
“This contract award is a strong endorsement of our capability and demonstrates the importance of our long-term relationships focusing on our customers’ needs.”
