Cowboys House & Downer
Empowering remote communities
NRL Cowboys House is removing distance as a barrier to quality secondary education for Indigenous students from some of Australia’s most remote and geographically disadvantaged communities.
For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in remote Far North Queensland communities, accessing quality secondary education can be a challenge, impacting their future opportunities. Cowboys House exists to remove that geographical disadvantage by providing a culturally safe boarding environment where students can live, learn and complete school in Townsville.
A supportive environment to grow
The House supports students not just academically, but holistically, with dedicated teams also focused on wellbeing, culture, career transitions and life skills. This wrap-around model gives students the stability and confidence to thrive in a new environment while staying connected to their family, culture and communities back home.

A partnership with purpose
Downer has partnered with Cowboys House since 2021, supporting the program and helping expand opportunities for students. Downer is proud to contribute to an environment where young people feel supported to succeed; not just in the classroom, but in building the confidence, skills and direction they need to pursue further education, employment and life

From education to employment
Beyond school, the focus shifts to what comes next. Through the partnership, Downer helps create work experience and employment pathways, including casual roles and apprenticeships, giving students real-world experience and a supported transition into the workforce.
“A skill that I’ve developed here is speaking up. Now I can speak in front of a big crowd, so it’s helped me a lot and will definitely help me in the future.” – Tahliyah
Enabling communities to thrive
This work embodies Downer’s Purpose: Enabling Communities to Thrive. By supporting Cowboys House and creating pathways into employment, Downer is helping young people from remote areas build independent, fulfilling futures and strengthening the communities they call home.
