In a significant achievement that underscores Downer's expertise in electrical projects and commitment to local manufacturing, in August our Industrial & Power Generation team from Downer’s Energy & Utilities business successfully completed its 2,000th Motor Control Centre (MCC) skid for Santos.

Originally contracted in 2019 to deliver 1,200 MCC skids, the order was expanded to a total of 2,000 units.

Manufactured and assembled at Downer’s state-of-the-art production facilities in Hexham, New South Wales and Richlands, Queensland, the completion of the 2,000th unit is a testament to Downer’s operational and technical expertise.

At Hexham, teams are responsible for the initial fit-out, cabling, and testing of the skids. The nearly completed units are then transported to Richlands for fit-out and quality assurance. Ultimately the skids are delivered to sites throughout Queensland.

This end-to-end solution showcases Downer’s strength in project management and technical expertise, from initial manufacturing through to site installation, says Murray Richards, Executive General Manager Industrial & Power Generation for Downer’s Energy & Utilities business.

“Achieving this milestone is a reflection of Downer’s manufacturing capability and our dedication to technical excellence,” he said.

“Our collaboration with Santos is a prime example of how strong partnerships can drive success and foster innovation. Through the project, we are also proud to contribute to the local economy by creating jobs and investing in skills development, particularly through our apprenticeship programs.”

Investing in Local Communities

Downer’s commitment to local manufacturing and workforce development has been a cornerstone of this project. Across the Richlands and Hexham workshops, approximately 25 people are employed in the manufacture and assembly of the MCCs, including more than 20 apprentices over the course of the project, who are gaining invaluable experience in the field.

In addition to direct employment, Downer has expanded its impact by engaging Aruma, a registered NDIS disability services provider, as a supplier for key manufacturing components. Since April 2023, Aruma’s team has supplied Downer with essential materials such as preformed cable and terminal mounting strips, further embedding the project within the local community and ensuring seamless execution.

Celebrating Success Together

The delivery of the 2,000th MCC skid was celebrated in a joint event at Downer’s Richlands facility on Thursday, 29 August, bringing together teams from Santos, Downer and suppliers. The celebration was not just a recognition of the achievement but also a reflection of the strong, enduring partnership between the two companies.

As Downer continues to support Santos in the field, the focus remains on delivering high-quality solutions that meet the needs of today while investing in the future. This milestone is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to excellence.
