Downer today announced that it has been appointed to a panel for transmission line and substation work across Transgrid’s electricity network in New South Wales.

The agreement is for an initial period of three years, with provisions for extension options for a further three years.

Under the agreement, Downer will be invited tender for a pipeline of individual projects across Transgrid’s transmission network, including substations, and infrastructure upgrades worth up to $500 million each.

The Chief Operating Officer of Downer’s Energy & Utilities business, Luke Sullivan, said Downer was one of the only Australian owned and operated Tier 1 contractors to the transmission and renewable energy sector.

“With more 50 years in the transmission industry, Downer has deep experience and capability in the delivery of transmission and substation infrastructure,” Luke said.

“This announcement builds on our 20+ year relationship with Transgrid and our ability to deliver the large-scale transmission infrastructure which will be central to the energy transition.”

As part of the agreement, Downer will take an active role in the governance of the panel framework and participate in the early development of projects. It will also work with Transgrid and the other panel members to develop opportunities for increased engagement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander enterprises and meaningful local industry participation.

“We’re pleased to be invited to collaborate with Transgrid and industry in developing innovative and practical solutions to support the roll-out of critical transmission infrastructure across NSW,” Luke said.

“There will be no transition without transmission and Downer is proud to be at the forefront of delivering a path toward a low-carbon future that benefits communities and helps to enable a low emissions power supply for future generations.”
