Downer people encouraged to “keep playing” at the 2027 New Zealand Masters Games

Registrations are now open for the 2027 Downer New Zealand Masters Games, and Downer is encouraging its people across Aotearoa New Zealand to take part.

Downer has been principal sponsor of the New Zealand Masters Games since 2019, and this year the focus is firmly on getting more of our own people to the start line.

The Games return to Whanganui from 5 to 14 February 2027, bringing together thousands of participants for New Zealand’s largest and longest-running multisport festival. With more than 60 sports on offer for people aged from 20 to 90-plus, the event is a celebration of participation, connection and giving things a go.

Managing Director NZ Murray Robertson says the Games reflect many of the qualities Downer people bring to work every day.

“The Masters Games are about turning up, putting in the effort and backing your mates – values our teams live every day on site and in our communities,” Murray says. “If our name is on the Games, we’d love to see Downer people on the field, on the court, in the pool, on the track or wherever they choose to compete.”

Downer employs around 6,000 people across New Zealand in transport, energy and utilities, and water. In Whanganui and the wider Manawatū and Rangitīkei region, more than 170 Downer people help keep local roads, footpaths, bridges and networks moving – making the Games a natural fit for a company with strong local roots.

Executive General Manager Transport & Infrastructure NZ South Lyall Hedges says Downer’s involvement is about more than sponsorship.

“Our crews are out on Whanganui’s roads and networks every day, and plenty of them play sport in this town too. Helping people get to the start line is our way of saying: get amongst it” says Lyall.

The Games also bring a boost to Whanganui, with visitors filling local accommodation, cafés, restaurants and the Games Village throughout the event.
