Culvert construction

Downer provides culvert solutions that address erosion control, flood protection and stormwater management – critical elements to ensuring road integrity and longevity.

We work in collaboration with customers and specialist subcontractors to integrate effective hydraulic design and ecological preservation into culvert construction.

For example, as part of the significant Saxton Creek upgrade project to increase the road’s ability to handle a 1-in-100-year flood event, Downer decommissioned the existing dual-tier box culvert beneath Main Road Stoke and installed new culvert structures. Unique engineering solutions were implemented to install the culvert consisting of L-shaped blocks, each weighing 23 tonnes and requiring a crane to place them into the creek.

To decommission the existing culvert, Downer worked with a specialist in ground improvements, ground engineering and void filling to address the challenge of filling the culverts to be decommissioned with the appropriate product that was also going to meet the required strength specifications.
