Downer is a key delivery partner to Port of Auckland – New Zealand’s largest import port, bringing in goods via a dedicated container handling facility, operating across multiple wharves.
We deliver planned and emergency pavement maintenance in this high-risk, active port environment with busy shipping container, vehicle, truck and rail movements, and cargo operations. This requires thorough planning for closures in busy areas and quick, safe responses to urgent issues. For routine work, we coordinate early with the Port of Auckland to develop construction plans that minimise disruption and keep cargo terminals running smoothly.
Through close collaboration with our regional paving teams, we typically respond to critical repairs within 48 hours. As of mid-2025, we have achieved 97% quality compliance on over 15,000m² of asphalt repairs, with the only area needing rework resulting from a survey error which led to a depression in the finished surface.
Drawing on extensive experience from port projects nationwide, we have utilised our national network to develop a comprehensive asphalt mix tailored for ports. This advancement has enabled us to significantly reduce the time required to restore operations in environments where time is critical. Our local teams also provide a range of civil services to the Port of Auckland, including pavement reconstruction, utility and drainage solutions, and concrete works. We collaborate closely with the Port of Auckland team to deliver these projects safely and efficiently, ensuring no disruption to ongoing Port operations within this high-risk environment.
