Delivered as part of the Wellington Metro Upgrade Programme, the WMUP6A project focused on improving safety, reliability, and capacity across the Wellington rail network. Completed in February 2025, the project included multidisciplinary safety upgrades around the Wellington Railway Station area.

This project transitioned Wellington’s rail network from a manually operated signalling lever frame to a modern, computerised signalling system with an aim to enhance safety and allow for an increase in future modern rail services. This included a multi-disciplinary approach to the design management and integration of new and existing rail assets to enhance the current rail system.

Our team embedded a value engineering approach into the project’s design and engineering management to enhance the design – optioneering solutions in terms of value, constructability, whole of life and cost effectiveness. As Lead Technical integrator we managed the design and integration of all rail disciplines on the project and produced a ‘Model first’ approach (producing a digital model of our design during the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase, to federate all designs were into one common data environment.

Our commitment to safety, innovation, and collaboration ensured the successful delivery of this complex upgrade while maintaining live rail operations and minimising disruption to daily services.
