<span data-contrast=”auto”>The Wiri to Quay Park project is a cornerstone of Auckland’s rail network enhancement, aimed at increasing capacity, improving resilience, and supporting future growth in both passenger and freight services. This initiative involved the construction of a new Third Main Line, a critical addition that acts as a passing lane for express and freight trains, to realise the benefit of the new City Rail Link (CRL) increased train timetable. Four packages of works were delivered over a five-year period. </span><span data-ccp-props=”{}”> </span><span data-ccp-props=”{}”> </span>
<span data-contrast=”auto”>Downer led the delivery of complex works including construction of a new 3.6km third main between Wiri and Westfield junction in Otahuhu, high speed cross overs at Wiri, Westfield, and Quay Park junctions, installation of new overhead line equipment structures, traction wiring, signalling, retaining walls, and collision protection measures to several existing bridges. </span><span data-ccp-props=”{}”> </span><span data-ccp-props=”{}”> </span>
<span data-contrast=”auto”>In collaboration with KiwiRail, we value engineered several retaining walls between Papatoetoe and Middlemore, to facilitate the new Third Main Line. The project required careful coordination across stakeholders and a strong safety-first approach to manage the risks working within a live rail site and working adjacent to operational trains.</span>
