Downer unlocks opportunities for Veterans’ families
Downer, Australia’s largest sovereign Defence partner, has launched their Downer Defence Veterans’ Family Scholarships, to support the children and grandchildren of Australian Veterans to pursue a tertiary education.
The three scholarships aim to drive meaningful change for Veterans and their families by removing financial barriers, empowering young people to pursue further education. Applications for the scholarships are open now, closing 31 October 2024.
David Morris, General Manager, Downer Defence says: “As a business which has a significant veteran workforce of our own, we are aware of the impact that Defence service can have on a family, and we are pleased to be able to give back to this remarkable community.
“There is no greater gift than the gift of education, which is why we’ve partnered with the Australian Veteran’s Children Assistance Trust to provide three scholarships which will ease the financial burden of tertiary education, helping the children and grandchildren of Australian Veterans to pursue full time studies.
“We’re incredibly thankful for Downer’s 1200+ Veteran employees and the considerable value and unique perspective they bring to our workforce. Through this program we want to not only honour them, but all Australian Veterans.”
Downer has a proud history supporting Defence for over 80 years and remains deeply committed to current and transitioned Defence personnel and their families.
The scholarships will be administered by Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT), a national charity managing tertiary scholarships to assist children and grandchildren of the Australian ex-service veteran community with the costs of full-time tertiary education.
Robyn Richardson AVCAT Scholarships Manager says, “Downer’s commitment expands our capacity to empower students pursuing tertiary education. This partnership demonstrates Downer’s dedication to Australian Veterans and enhances our ability to make a meaningful impact in the lives of veteran families.”
A founding member of the Australian Veterans Employers Coalition (AVEC), Downer actively promotes veteran employment and participation, providing tailored career and wellbeing support to respond to the unique strengths and needs of veterans. In addition, Downer supports ADF spouses and partners to enter operational roles in the business, facilitating where possible their transfer to other Downer sites or projects if relocation is required due to their partner’s posting.
The scholarships will be awarded based on financial need, academic potential, and deservedness, supporting students undertaking full-time study at University, TAFE or Registered Training Organisations within Australia.
