The Emerging Mobility Leaders Committee visited Downer’s Newport Rail Facility to learn more about the manufacturing process and high capacity signalling on the HCMTs.

On 8 August, Downer hosted the Emerging Mobility Leaders Committee (EMLC) at our Newport Rail Facility to see the manufacturing process for Melbourne’s most accessible train, the High Capacity Metro Trains.

The EMLC, as part of the Public Transport Association Australia and New Zealand (PTAANZ) were able to see the manufacturing process which includes the installation of the pantographs, bogies, wheels, auxiliary cables and seats, just to name a few.

As the EMLC are 35 or under and come from a range of organisations within the public transport industry, it’s wonderful to provide the future leaders of mobility with exposure to all aspects of rolling stock asset management.

Speaking on the visit, Ruw Palapathwala, Acting Co-Chair of the EMLC said, “It was an immersive experience for the EMLs at Downer’s Newport facility, learning first-hand the manufacturing process of HCMTs and understanding how rolling stock and signalling technology can shape the future of public transport for future passengers.”

Jamie-Lee Owen, Acting Co-Chair was not only impressed with the manufacturing process, but also the varied skills and job roles needed in the process. “It’s been an eye-opening experience,” she said.

“To see just how many varied skills are needed to deliver one component of the public transport environment, it’s made us excited to think about all the career opportunities our industry provides.”

Natalie Bond, General Manager Metro Fleet is proud to show the manufacturing process, as well as recognise the latest milestone for the HCMTs—the two test trains running through the Metro Tunnel.

“The HCMTs are already the most accessible, reliable, safest and comfortable trains on Melbourne’s metro network,” she said.

“But with the testing through the Metro Tunnel now happening since late July, it was a great time for the EMLs to visit our Newport Rail Facility.

“The HCMTs are a part of the step change in public transport and help elevate Melbourne to the international city it is. To showcase not only our manufacturing but also the technical aspects with the future leaders of mobility was a rare opportunity that Downer is proud to offer.”
