Families welcomed as new apprentices begin their trade careers at Hexham
Families and future tradespeople came together at Downer’s Hexham manufacturing hub last year, with a meet-and-greet welcoming the next intake of apprentices as they prepare to begin their trade careers at Downer.
The event gave new starters the chance to connect with the Downer team and feel supported from the outset – recognising that starting an apprenticeship is a milestone shared with family as much as the individual.
Workshop Superintendent, Tony Stace, said that bringing apprentices and their families together early helped create a sense of belonging from the outset.
“It’s about helping everyone feel comfortable, supported and excited about what’s ahead,” Tony said.
The idea was inspired by personal experience, after Tony attended a similar orientation when their own son began an apprenticeship. “That welcome made a real difference, and it felt right to offer the same experience here at Downer.”
Commencing next month, Downer’s newest intake of seven Hunter-based apprentices will join the group of six apprentices already completing their electrical, sheet metal and boilermaker qualifications.
For many of the apprentices, the opportunity represents both a career pathway and a personal milestone.
First Year Apprentice, Bowen, said he was keen to follow in the boilermaking footsteps of his grandfather. “After a couple of interviews, I’m here and ready to get started.”
Jake said the range of opportunities was a key drawcard. “I want to become a qualified electrician, and there’s so much variety in the work and so many paths you can take over time.”
Others highlighted the culture and people as standout features. “It’s a great group to be part of. There are heaps of skills to learn and plenty of opportunities for the future.”
Supporting apprentices through strong mentoring, clear expectations and a positive culture is central to the program.
“The focus is on mentoring and working alongside apprentices as they learn and grow,” Tony said. “They’ve earned their place here, and there’s a lot to look forward to in the years ahead.”
