Responsible sourcing
The way we procure at Downer can help to support social and sustainable outcomes across Downer’s business, the supply chain, Downer’s customers, across Australia and beyond.
By helping to build a diverse supply chain, Downer’s procurement capability can support businesses of all types to grow and encourage economic and social development while ensuring a sustainable future.
This is how our procurement activities can contribute towards our purpose: Enabling communities to thrive.
Supplier diversity
We support and welcome the opportunity to work with diverse suppliers.
In Australia, we actively collaborate with Social Traders, Supply Nation and Kinaway to identify opportunities to further diversify our supply chain.
In New Zealand, through strong partnership and our membership with Amotai, we actively engage Maori and Pasifika businesses, recognising their unique strenghts and contributions to Aotearoa’s economy.
If you are a diverse supplier, you can express your interest to supply to Downer via Felix, our procurement and supplier management platform. Please note, we will be in touch if opportunities arise, in our operations or as part of the projects we deliver.
Downer is proud to be recognised as Social Traders ‘’Big Spender’’ in FY24 – having spent over $12 million dollars with Social Traders certified social enterprises.
Below are some great examples of partnerships between Downer and social enterprises:
Amotai partnership
Downer partners with Manawhenua in many areas across Aotearoa. We also have formed a strong nationwide partnership with Amotai – Supplier Diversity Aotearoa to support a growing register of Māori and Pasifika suppliers and subcontractors (defined as 50% ownership) which meet a number of our civil and building construction opportunities where we are not self – performing. We are an Aukokiri member which means we are part of the ‘driving current’ for growing supplier diversity opportunities.
We are:
- Working with Amotai to identify potential Māori and Pasifika businesses who meet capability and capacity requirements for our projects or our long- term contracts
- Optimising subcontract and supply chain packages of work to enable the identified Māori and Pasifika businesses to price and tender for our work
- Working with our subcontractor and supply chain partners to identify specific packages of work that can be made available to Māori and Pasifika businesses.
Modern Slavery
Downer is committed to respecting human rights, in our operations and in our supply-chain.
Downer was a founding and active member of the Infrastructure Sustainability Council’s (ISC) Modern Slavery Coalition until it concluded in January 2026. The coalition saw industry members collaborating on initiatives to identify and manage modern slavery risks in the supply chains relevant to the infrastructure sector.
Downer’s Modern Slavery statements can be found below:
Governance
Downer has a number of governance tools and internal procedures that assist us in our modern slavery response:
- Standards of Business Conduct DG-CS-PO008_Standards_of_Business_Conduct.pdf
- Business Integrity Policy DG-CS-PO003_Business_Integrity_Policy.pdf
