Shamrock Civil’s story
Shamrock Civil is an Australian civil engineering contractor established in 1994 that provides safe, sustainable and smart solutions.
The company has worked in Defence industry since 2006 and was recognised in Australian Defence Magazine’s Top 40 SMEs in 2022. They were named #5 in the top ANZ SME and #6 in the Top 20 SMEs.
Nick Sandwell, Operations Manager shares why working with the Defence industry remains a high priority for Shamrock Civil.
Why is working in Defence Industry important to your business?
Working in the Defence industry has provided us with a steady growth path in recent years. The Defence sector is constantly innovating and developing new technologies to enhance national security. As a civil engineering contractor, we can leverage our expertise and experience to support the development and construction of critical infrastructure for the Defence industry. Additionally, the Defence industry can provide stable and long-term contracts that can help ensure consistent revenue and growth opportunities for our business. Overall, working in the Defence industry can provide us with the opportunity to contribute to important national security efforts while also expanding our business and capabilities.
What is the most valuable support a Prime can provide to your business?
Collaboration between our business and a Prime is crucial for us to deliver work efficiently and effectively. Clear communication from a Prime provides us with a sound framework to carry out works with minimal to nil impacts on Defence activities. Working with a Prime also enables us to plan for potential business opportunities in the Defence industry and helps to align our resources and capability for upcoming projects.
How has Downer Defence contributed to your business success?
Working on Downer Defence projects has expanded our reach into regions throughout Australia that we may not have otherwise had access to, allowing us to grow and develop our supply chain network. This has helped to increase our visibility and reputation in the industry, as well as increase our capability to deliver Defence projects.
How does sustainability play a role in your work?
At the heart of Shamrock Civil, we provide safe, sustainable and smart solutions. Sustainability is important to our business, and we are committed to understanding, meeting and continuously evolving our approach to environmental management. For example, on a project working with Downer Defence we conducted a pre-construction survey which identified potential plants that could be affected by construction works. Our team identified, tracked, logged and recorded the endangered flora Pineapple Zamia and extreme care was taken to preserve these protected species from any construction impacts. As a result, we were able to ensure this threatened vegetation within the Defence estate was protected.
What advice would you give another SME trying to start up or scale in the Defence industry?
Connect with local industry network providers and training organisations to become aware of upcoming business opportunities and training workshops to become prepared for Defence business. For example, networks such as Australian Industry & Defence Network Queensland (AIDN QLD), ICN Gateway or your local Defence Industry Hub.
