Circular economy and responsible resource use
The demand for smarter use of raw materials and waste reduction is growing across communities, industry and government — and Downer is committed to leading with practical solutions.
By partnering with customers and suppliers, we aim to reduce waste, conserve resources and embed circular economy principles across our operations.
Raw materials and circular economy
Our products and services rely on both renewable and non-renewable materials. We work to lessen their impact by increasing recycled content, improving product design and supporting reuse. Across Australia and New Zealand, Downer teams have introduced innovative recycling programs, such as repurposing personal protective equipment (PPE) and workwear into new products. These initiatives not only reduce the amount of waste going to landfill but also create value from recovered materials.

Waste
We manage waste through a clear hierarchy: avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover and, as a last resort, dispose. Waste management is planned before site works commence, with processes established to reduce landfill waste and ensure any disposal is fully compliant with statutory requirements. By applying this framework, and working closely with partners, we reduce reliance on virgin resources while protecting the health of people, communities and the environment. We also carefully manage the storage, handling, transportation, tracking and disposal of regulated waste.
Sustainable Products and Services
Downer is committed to supplying more sustainable products, particularly across its road surfacing offerings, and is continually innovating to include greater recycled content in its products. Please refer to Sustainable products and services.
