Shane’s story

Meet our veteran workforce

From eight years as an infantry soldier to leading teams on an Army base, Shane brings practical knowledge and a real sense of tradition to his role as a Carpentry Leading Hand at Gallipoli Barracks with Downer Defence. His journey from being on the tools to supervisor also reflects his adaptability and commitment to a job well done.

At Downer, our focus is on strengthening Defence capability in everything we do. From delivering professional services above the line to maintaining critical infrastructure and modernising Defence precincts, our success is built on the strength of a diverse team. Their combined experience across military and civilian sectors adds depth, skill and a shared sense of purpose to every project we undertake.

Now working at the base near his home in Brisbane, Shane followed in his father’s footsteps and continued a family legacy of military service. He grew up here – on the same base where his dad served for much of his 42 years – riding his bike where he now does his civilian job overseeing carpentry maintenance and projects across Gallipoli Barracks.

Today, he brings his own kids to see where both he and their grandfather have worked, creating a living tradition of service and pride.

Shane values the variety of his job and the trust Downer places in its people; something he hadn’t experienced in previous organisations. For Shane, it’s more than a job – it is about contributing to Defence capability while honouring a proud family tradition.
