Creating a workplace where people feel safe, respected and able to contribute sits at the core of how people are supported across Downer. LGBTQIA+ inclusion is a key focus of our Inclusion & Belonging strategy, and across our more than 26,000 employees, Downer aims to remove barriers so people can bring their whole selves to work.
For Eli Perez, Project Manager – NSW Schools PPP in Downer’s Social Infrastructure & Citizen Services business, this commitment came to life during their gender transition journey, supported by a manager willing to listen, learn and act.
Contract Manager Amber McKenzie worked from the outset to ensure Eli felt supported and respected at work.
“When I first joined the contract, Amber very quickly acknowledged my gender identity and asked how I would like to be addressed. She also very respectfully asked how much I care to share.”
As the working relationship developed, both Eli and Amber recognised the need to keep learning. Challenges around consistent pronoun use led to an honest conversation about the importance of recognising Eli’s non-binary gender identity, and how to support the team to ensure inclusive practices.
From there, action followed. Amber built her understanding of leading diverse teams, applied practical techniques to correct pronoun use, and worked to create an inclusive day-to-day environment. It was an important step in building trust and strengthening their working relationship.
As Eli progressed through their transition, including gender affirmation surgery and a name change, Amber’s support was of vital importance. Flexible work arrangements, time for medical appointments and a clear plan to implement Eli’s name change across systems and stakeholders helped ensure a supportive and respectful experience.
“Amber consulted with me and HR in planning the name change. She assisted with a lot of the administrative and IT workload of creating the change and placed herself as the person to answer questions or correct people while the name took hold. This made my experience in the team and at Downer incredibly supportive as a transgender person,” said Eli.
This made my experience in the team and at Downer incredibly supportive as a transgender person.
Reflecting on the journey, Eli said: “I now consider Amber an incredible ally for the LGBTQIA+ community, as it takes immeasurable strength and care to grow and learn as she did with me. Our journey together has made a lasting impact on my life and experience as a queer person in a corporate environment.”
By learning, adapting and working together, Downer continues to strengthen inclusive environments where people feel supported to succeed.
