Sustainable Porous Asphalt as Part of Urban Drainage System
The aim of the project was to develop a new porous asphalt as part of a sustainable drainage system. The innovative porous asphalt was primarily made of recycled materials including rubber, concrete, brick, printer toner and plastics, which comprised over 90% of the components. The sustainable porous asphalt along with the other components of the drainage system were constructed at a footpath in Merri-bek City Council. The construction of the permeable pavement showcased the potential for alternatives where recycled, recovered, and repurposed materials could be utilised. The project received AfPA National and State Innovation Awards in 2022.
