Millenium fleet

Since first entering service over 20 years ago, the Millennium fleet has been a cornerstone of Sydney’s rail network. Designed and built in Australia, these 35 four-car sets continue to deliver reliable performance thanks to Downer’s end-to-end asset support.

Downer provides full through-life support for the fleet—from engineering and maintenance to system upgrades and digital monitoring. Our teams have delivered key enhancements including traction system overhauls, bogie and damper upgrades, and the integration of Automatic Train Protection (ATP) technology.

We’ve also localised critical services such as gearbox and electronic component overhauls to improve sustainability and operational efficiency. With maintenance contracted through to 2027, Downer is actively planning for the fleet’s next phase, including midlife upgrades to extend service life and maintain safety and reliability well into the future.
