Waratah train fleet
Downer is proud to have designed, built and now maintain Australia’s largest fleet of passenger trains, servicing Australia’s largest passenger network.
The workhorse of Sydney’s passenger network, Downer’s 119 8-car Waratah train fleet.
The Waratah Train Fleet stands as the backbone of Sydney’s rail network, delivering unparalleled reliability and comfort to commuters. Comprising 119 state-of-the-art, double-decker trains, the Waratah series represents the largest fleet of passenger trains in Australia.
Designed with passenger convenience in mind, these trains feature smart air conditioning systems that adapt to ambient temperatures and occupancy levels, ensuring a comfortable journey in all conditions.
Enhanced safety measures include comprehensive CCTV coverage, advanced fire detection technology, and an open carriage design that allows seamless movement throughout the train.
Maintained at a purpose-built facility in Sydney’s West, as well as heavy maintenance being undertaken in the Hunter, the Waratah fleet consistently achieves high performance standards, making it a cornerstone of Sydney’s public transport infrastructure.
Smarter support for a safer journey
At Downer, we support the Waratah fleet through every stage of its lifecycle—from design and delivery to daily operations and beyond. Our through-life support model ensures reliability and safety long after the trains enter service.
Using real-time data and our Integrated Operations Centre, we continuously monitor performance and predict failures before they happen. This proactive approach keeps services running smoothly and passengers moving safely—day in, day out.
