The Waratah fleet has been the backbone of Sydney’s suburban rail network delivering reliable, high-performance outcomes at scale.
15 Years keeping Sydney moving
Every day begins with a journey, and for 15 years the Waratah fleet has been part of that rhythm across Sydney. Today, the fleet plays a vital role in connecting communities across one of Australia’s busiest rail networks and has become a familiar part of daily life for millions of passengers.
“As we mark this milestone, it’s a reminder of the important role the waratah fleet plays in connecting communities across Sydney. I want to say a big thanks to all the teams for the work you’re doing today to keep these trains running so reliably” Matt Longland, Chief Executive, Sydney Trains
But what makes the Waratah program truly iconic isn’t just the trains. Behind that performance is a dedicated team of engineers, technicians, apprentices and industry partners who work every day to keep the fleet safe, reliable and available for passengers.
Today, the Waratah Series 1 and Series 2 fleets operate on one of Australia's largest and most intensively used suburban rail networks, supporting passengers across the city every day.
- 119 trains in service, Australia's largest passenger fleet
- Approximately 300 million passenger journeys each year
- Supporting more than 60% of Sydney's suburban services
Predictive, data-driven maintenance
At the core of the Waratah maintenance program is Downer's innovative asset management model, combining preventive, condition-based and data-driven approaches. Powered by TrainDNA, Downer's proprietary asset intelligence platform:
- Each train generates thousands of condition signals in real time
- Engineers can identify emerging issues before they impact service
- Maintenance activities can be targeted to improve availability and reduce disruption
This shift from reactive to predictive maintenance helps improve reliability, optimise asset life and support continuous performance improvement across a maturing fleet.
Built on partnership and sovereign capability
"This is what high performance looks like, delivered by our teams in Auburn and Cardiff alongside a strong local supply chain and by the next generation of rail professionals that we're helping to nurture." Peter Tompkins, Chief Executive Officer, Downer Group
The Waratah program is part of a 30+ year manufacturing and maintenance partnership between Downer, Reliance Rail and Transport for NSW. Behind every journey is a network of engineers, technicians, apprentices, supply chain partners and industry specialists working together to keep Australia's largest passenger fleet performing at its best.
Operations are anchored at:
- Auburn Maintenance Centre (AMC)
- Cardiff Service Delivery Centre
Supported by a strong Australian supply chain, the program continues to:
- Build specialist rail capability and skills in Australia
- Retain critical knowledge, data and intellectual property onshore
- Reduce reliance on offshore repair and improve turnaround times
Through investments such as the Electronics Test and Repair Centre (ETRC), complex rail electronic components can be repaired locally rather than replaced or sent offshore.
Sustainability
Long-term fleet performance is supported by a maintenance philosophy focused on reliability, resource efficiency and whole-of-life asset management.
- More than 9,000 components refurbished, diverting 6.9 tonnes of e-waste from landfill at our Cardiff Electronics Test and Repair Centre (ETRC)
- 25% reduction in HVAC energy consumption, contributing to a 13% reduction in total fleet energy use
- GRESB score of 100/100 in 2025, ranked first globally

Looking ahead
The Waratah program demonstrates how long-term partnerships, skilled people, innovative asset management and local capability can work together to deliver reliable outcomes for customers and communities.
As the fleet reaches its 15-year milestone, the focus remains on:
- Continuing to improve reliability and customer outcomes
- Investing in the next generation of rail professionals
- Strengthening sovereign rail capability in Australia
- Building on a proven model of data-led asset management and long-term partnership.
