Overview

PipeTech completed the rehabilitation of 20 sewer manholes along the Sans Souci waterfront for Sydney Water. The assets, many over 100 years old, had deteriorated due to harsh coastal conditions, resulting in cracking and leakage that allowed saltwater ingress into the sewer network.

The Challenge

The manholes were exposed to an aggressive marine environment, accelerating structural deterioration and reducing the operational efficiency of the wastewater system. Saltwater infiltration posed a risk to downstream pump station equipment and long-term asset performance.

Additionally, the assets were located within private waterfront properties, requiring careful coordination with property owners, while works needed to accommodate tidal movements, weather conditions, and protect the sensitive marine environment.

Solution Delivered

PipeTech implemented a specialised internal waterproofing system to restore the manholes and prevent further ingress. This included:

  • Installation of a chimney sealing system to address structural defects and leakage at the manhole access points
  • Application of an epoxy fibreglass lining to fully seal and protect the internal surface of each manhole

This bespoke rehabilitation approach created a durable, watertight barrier, improving structural integrity and extending the service life of the assets.

Outcome

The project was successfully delivered across all 20 manholes, restoring asset performance and significantly reducing the risk of saltwater infiltration. The works will help ensure the long-term reliability of the wastewater network and protect critical downstream infrastructure.

PipeTech continues to support Sydney Water with innovative rehabilitation solutions, drawing on in-house expertise and advanced technologies to deliver efficient, low-impact outcomes across complex environments.
