Safe Over Summer is Social Infrastructure and Citizen Services’ flagship seasonal safety program.
It responds to a period of elevated risk, when higher temperatures, heavier workloads and end‑of‑year pressures can affect concentration and judgment.
Delivered over eight weeks during 2025–26, the program reached more than 7,000 workers across more than 150 contracts. A mix of interactive toolbox talks, short quizzes, videos and highly visible campaign materials helped bring safety messages into day‑to‑day conversations on site. By combining clear, role‑specific content with elements of gamified learning and attendance tracking, the program increased participation and strengthened the quality of frontline safety discussions.
A practical, people-led approach
This practical, people‑led approach produced measurable results, with Social Infrastructure & Citizen Services recording their strongest safety performance in four years. Beyond the numbers, the program also reinforced a culture in which people feel confident to speak up, pause work when necessary and look out for one another.
Nationally recognised for excellence
Safe Over Summer was recognised with the Best WHS Training Program award at the National Safety Council of Australia Excellence Awards. The program demonstrates how consistent, targeted learning can support lasting behaviour change. By pairing awareness with clear action at the frontline, it continues to build a proactive and resilient safety culture across diverse operating environments.
Safe Over Summer reflects Downer’s ongoing commitment to protecting the safety and wellbeing of its people, today and into the future.
